Ulcerative Colitis

Our Method

Our Unique Approach to Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disorder affecting the colon, characterised by a relapsing and remitting course driven by a combination of genetics, environmental factors, autoimmunity, and alterations in gut microbiota requiring targeted, regenerative intervention.

Ulcerative Colitis Overview

UC is a chronic inflammatory bowel disorder that causes continuous inflammation of the mucosal lining from the rectum to varying extents of the proximal colon. Its relapsing and remitting course means symptoms flare up and subside over time, with risk factors encompassing genetics, environmental influences, autoimmunity, and alterations in gut microbiota.

Symptoms & Clinical Presentation

The typical presentation of UC includes bloody diarrhoea with or without mucus, rectal urgency, tenesmus — a persistent feeling of incomplete bowel movement — and variable degrees of abdominal pain that is often relieved by bowel movements. These symptoms significantly impact daily quality of life and require effective long-term management.

MSC Immunosuppressive Properties

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells with well-documented immunosuppressive properties, making them a promising treatment strategy for inflammatory bowel disorders like UC. MSCs have gained global attention for their use in cell transplantation due to their ease of expansion and their remarkable ability to home directly to the intestinal mucosa.

MSC Mucosal Repair & Regeneration

MSCs can differentiate into epithelial and other cell types that directly promote repair of mucosal damage in UC. They represent a particularly promising option for patients who have not responded well to conventional therapies — offering a regenerative pathway that targets both the inflammatory response and the structural repair of damaged intestinal tissue.
