Our Unique Approach to Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) encompasses various conditions characterised by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract primarily Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis requiring innovative, targeted therapies that go beyond conventional management.

IBD Disease Overview

IBD is a term encompassing conditions characterised by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two primary forms are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which significantly affect the digestive system and overall quality of life for patients worldwide.

Complications & Clinical Impact

IBD can cause significant gastrointestinal symptoms leading to malnutrition and serious complications such as fistulas — abnormal connections between organs — as well as an increased risk of developing cancer. These outcomes have driven researchers to explore novel and more effective therapeutic strategies.

MSC Therapy as a Treatment Avenue

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are currently being investigated as a promising treatment option for IBD. Their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties make them strong candidates for addressing the chronic immune dysregulation that underlies both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

MSC Efficacy in Crohn's Disease

Studies have shown that MSCs can be safe and effective for perianal fistulising Crohn's disease (PFCD) — a specific subtype involving fistula formation around the anus. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of MSCs in managing complex IBD presentations and open new avenues for regenerative intervention.
